Beginning in the fall of 1998, 25 young girls from Kindergarten through 5th grade at South Plains signed up to be involved in a special Bible-based program called Caterpillars & Butterflies.  This unique curriculum was created by four mothers from Midland, Texas in the fall of 1979 to encourage young girls to become Christian women.  The program was designed to guide mothers in teaching their daughters what the Bible says concerning social, emotional, and physical development for young girls as they prepare for womanhood.  Thanks to Susan Bailey, the program was started at South Plains.

The groups are divided by grade level, and each group decides upon a convenient time to meet once each month.  Each monthly meeting is hosted by different mother/daughter teams, and mothers are expected to attend the meetings with their daughters.  A typical meeting lasts about an hour or so and may include devotional time, prayer, going over the group's motto and song, self-esteem building activities, and refreshments.  On occasion, the mothers may coordinate a "fun day" that may vary from baking cookies at a host mother and daughter's home to going on a field trip.  These activities give the girls an opportunity to spend time together and gives them a chance to get to know the other mothers.

Throughout the year, the entire group (K-5) gets together for some extra-special fun.  These include a Mother/Daughter Lock-In, a Father/Daughter Banquet, and a Mother/Daughter Tea.
